The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 is a law enacted by the Government of India to promote transparency and accountability in public authorities. It empowers citizens to request information from government departments, ensuring openness in administration. Under this Act, every public authority must provide timely information, except in cases affecting national security, privacy, or sensitive matters. It mandates the appointment of Public Information Officers (PIOs) to handle requests. The Act also establishes the Central and State Information Commissions to address appeals and complaints. RTI strengthens democracy by enabling citizens to participate actively and hold the government accountable.
